The girls in the picture below are 7 and 8 year old beginners. They enjoy playing the singing games from their book, PLAY AND PLAY PIANO BOOK FOR BEGINNERS. The lesson sequence each week is that we start by playing the singing game one time that had been their assignment of the week. Next, they play the music on the piano. Then, they take turns playing the game again while others play the music and sing the song.
The next part of the lesson involves everyone having a turn playing a new game that was just introduced at the end of the prior week's lesson. After they've all had a turn, we look at the music in their piano book. The students do some things together -they read and clap the rhythm, find the hand position, etc. Then, they play this new song in their book one at time with me. This is will be their assigned piece to practice for the week. The other students color the picture on their page as they wait their turn to play for me. Students stay engaged the whole time by coloring and quietly visiting. Waiting their turn is not boring. Coloring their picture is another fun and important part of the lesson.
The third part of the lesson is when a new singing game is introduced. I sing the song and demonstrate the game. Students do not see the music yet. This new game song will be their new assigned piece for next week. This is just an introduction. A new singing game is a fun way to end the lesson.
Students record their attendance by adding a bead to their string. They can also earn extra beads for evidence of practice during the week, playing and singing note names and words, etc.
They get a piece of candy at the end of the lesson. Oh, one other very important part of the lesson - they select something from the Treasure Box on the last lesson of the month.
This is an hour long lesson and the time goes so quickly! We all have fun!
