THE BENEFITS OF PLAYING GAMES

Beginning piano students enjoy singing games. For them, it's a fun game and they know they'll each get a turn. For teachers, it's a very intentional part of the lesson. It's purpose is to prepare them to read the music. As students sing the song and take turns playing, they are repeating the music several times. But it's not boring repetition-it's fun! Then, when they see the music for the first time, they are prepared to read the rhythm correctly because they know "the way the words go." They also can often self-correct as they're playing because they know the tune of the song.
